[iPAQ] SD Card protocol specs

Does anyone know where there are specs on the SD Card? www.sdcard.org
doesn't seem to have make them available to non-members. The flash chips
contains blocks of 512-bytes and associated with each block is a further
16-bytes of bookkeeping data. I'm specifically wondering if this metadata
in each flash sector is accessible from outside the card.
