Technically it's not required, but when I made my first dualboot images,
I spend like 4 hours triing to get my host to make cramfs that could
boot on my ipaq. It just did not work. There are dualboot images
available from handhelds.org, they use cramfs. more than one person was
unable to make them work.

You might want to try to get it to work without rebuilding the kernel
... well I might later this week.
