In fact, I have a much bigger problem: most of the time my desktop just
won't recognize the usb0 interface. I even did alias usb0 usbnet in
/etc/modules.conf, I tried with hotplug too, but to no avail. There is
an exact sequence of operations (manual rmmod, insmod, inserting the ipaq,
bringing up usbf on the ipaq, the phase of the moon...)

ifconfig usb0 up on the desktop just says:
usb0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

The usbf is up on the ipaq. It's just frustrating.. it sometimes (rarely)
works. and I don't know why :(

When I get usb0 up again, I'll try first bringing down usb0 manually.
