I once compared the size of X built native (armv3) vs. our cross toolchain
(arm4l), and got a 15% size difference.
The issue is that when running out of flash, that 15% on all your overhead
(kernel, libc, whatever base windowing infrastructure you choose)
translates to large changes in available space for applications....
So we're alot more sensitive to this than when running out of disk or
large external flash...
