Recently, I tried to write an application that reads from the serial
port. In my haste, I forgot to disable the console as an output for the
serial port (/dev/ttySA0). Now, I have two problems:
1. The first problem is that the serial port no longer seems to
function. I'm using Hyperterm on a PC with a null modem cable and the
configuration settings are absolutely correct, 115200, 8N1, no flow
control. (Using the same cable and these settings, I can talk to
another iPAQ that I have via the console over the serial port.)
However, I am not able to get either a familiar login prompt or a boot>
loader prompt to display in Hyperterm. So, the questions are: Have I
destroyed my serial port entirely? If not, how can I restore my iPAQ so
that the serial port to console interface works? If the serial port is
destroyed, is there a way to repair the iPAQ? Note: I can still ssh
into my device to make configuration changes.
2. Once I get my console problem fixed, I want to be able to use the
serial port to read in a data from another device. I read somewhere on
these mailing lists (I think over at [handhelds]) that I need disable
the console and prevent getty from firing in inittab. How exactly
should this be accomplished correctly? And, are there other things I
should do to disable the serial port so that *other* applications can
use it.
Any input on this matter is appreciated.
