you can connect two serial devices (for example iPAQ and modem) with
null modem cable/reduction. i made it myself:

two male Canon 9-pin connectors wired by scheme:
1,6 --- 4
  2 --- 3
  3 --- 2
  4 --- 1,6
  5 --- 5
  7 --- 8
  8 --- 7

i did few attempts to make my USR Sportster work, but without real
success. there is probably really no hardware handshaking on iPAQ's
serial port (exactly it's driver).
i wanted to use Xon/Xoff, but i have a lot of general problems with
minicom on iPAQ and then i was out of time...
