I should have mentioned that it's the authorization which I was curious
about. Passwords have problems which are addressed by some hardware
devices.
I'm aware there are plenty of protection tools available to protect data
with Linux, but they have to be controlled by some sort of
identification/authorization interface.
(Of course, the first step in protection is running all the apps as a
non-root user...)
