What version of Familiar are you running? You should be able to
do this:
    stty 4800 </dev/tts/0
    cat </dev/tts/0
and see NMEA sentences.

Yes, for some reason, the Zaurus people inserted a 'cardctl suspend'
into the serial.opts file. If you take it out, then gpsd talks to the
Pretec quite handily.

My problem with the Pretec is that it's too damn fragile. I've busted
two cards already -- and the second card is clearly due to a broken
trace or solder joint, because if I flex the GPS receiver in the CF
socket, it works. Basically, the Pretec is designed for automobile
use, not for pocket use.

Never, never put a pretec in your pocket if it's inserted into a
sleeve -- and maybe you shouldn't even put it in your pocket bare!
