you'd get this if the ipaq is sleeping and dropping the connection.
when it wakes up, the file handles might not be valid anymore.

you can also, check nfstat on the desktop and see why the file handles
are getting lost. it may just be a slow network. man 5 nfs will give
you some info on tuning.
