I think the problem here is that there is no editor included in the JFFS2
file system images. Therefore, it is difficult to configure a network (ie
modifying network.opts) in order to get to the point where you can install
any packages (including vim).
Anyway, in the past I have had to use sed in order to do search and replace
on the values in network.opts, for example:
sed s/IPADDR=\"\"/IPADDR="192.168.1.1"/ network.opts > network.opts.2
cp network.opts.2 network.opts
Obviously, you'll also have to do this with NETMASK, NETWORK, BROADCAST and
GATEWAY (depending on your configuration).
I also discovered that the Z-modem package is not included by default as the
other option would have been to upload a new copy of network.opts from the
desktop.
Hopefully, future installation instructions will explain how to configure
the network without access to an editor.
