Sorry, can't help w/the lockup problem beyond perhaps the Xserver options
for video blanking might help:

v video blanking for screen-saver
-v screen-saver without video blanking

looks like it's picking up the DISPLAY variable from your ssh session.
I'd try: env DISPLAY=:0.0 /etc/init.d/x start
