I went through a few hours of work to hunt things down and this helped, but
wasn't enough.
I restarted with familiar 0.52 and did a complete install of OPIE instead of
QPE.
Either the 2.4.18 kernel, or the opie-batteryapplet-ipaq fixed the problem.
