It just occurred to me what the problem may be:
The keyboard mapping used in xscribble is gotten from the X server,
and the new X server gets that from the Linux tty device driver.
The old X server had a built in keyboard mapping, and may not
have had this problem, as the mapping was built in.
If there isn't appropriate mapping for backspace/delete, we might lose...
I'm about 90% sure that something along these lines is the problem.
