For what it's worth:

I had no problem running fsck or fsck.ext2 on my Kingston compact
flash partition, (it was clean):

        teeny:/mnt/ramfs/root# fsck /dev/hda1
        Parallelizing fsck version 1.14 (9-Jan-1999)
        e2fsck 1.14, 9-Jan-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
         hda: hda1
        /dev/hda1: clean, 17/15680 files, 5339/62576 blocks

        teeny:/mnt/ramfs/root# fsck.ext2 /dev/hda1
        e2fsck 1.14, 9-Jan-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
         hda: hda1
        /dev/hda1: clean, 17/15680 files, 5339/62576 blocks

However, I was able to get fsck to segfault, (while fsck.ext2 did
not), by running them on /dev/hda rather than /dev/hda1:

        teeny:/mnt/ramfs/root# fsck /dev/hda
        Parallelizing fsck version 1.14 (9-Jan-1999)
        Segmentation fault

        teeny:/mnt/ramfs/root# fsck.ext2 /dev/hda
        e2fsck 1.14, 9-Jan-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
         hda: hda1
        Couldn't find hda: ext2 superblock, t hda1rying bac
        kup blocks...
         hda: hda1
         hda: hda1
         hda: hda1
fsck.ext2: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while tryia
Could this be a zero-length partition?
