If you have ssh access on your iPaq, it's dead simple:

ssh 1.1.1.1 cat /dev/mtdblock/1 | gzip > ipaqroot.img.gz

(where 1.1.1.1 is the ip address of your ipaq)
ipaqroot.img.gz will be your new root partition to load with bootblaster
("load root" command). This is handy to make backups too.
