[iPAQ] rz wont download

Strangely rz now seems not to want to work. sz is fine
can't fathom it, wondering if I've forgotten part of this ritual:

start minicom
login
move to directory
rz
C-a s
xmodem
spacebar on file
return

all easily within 5 seconds, and it wont work, how can i check what might be wrong?
