I've been partial to the use of the touchpad, it shouldn't be too hard to
add a driver which would simulate some game-pads on the surface of the
touchscreen. Unfortunately this might obscure the view for many
fast-packed games, and induce undue wear and tear to the screen. Also,
having visual guides to the touchpad buttons would be nice, but easier
said than done. An alternative would be to build or find a cheap serial
gamepad. Problem with this is the connector; altough you could jack it up
to the serial cradle/cable with simple adaptor, I think.
