Funny, you're the first to mention this, while I don't have an 38xx
(yet, as the 3870 is not available in Germany) I think (IMHO) your
problem is the fact, that the display of your 38xx is wired 180 degreas
rotatet to the display on the 3[67]xx and xcalibrate does not know about
the fact.

I get funny results when I try to caibrate with a rotated display, too.

BTW: It might actually work right, if you first rotate your display to
     "Inverted".
