I took a quick look at the USB Communications Class. Emulating a modem
shouldn't be too hard -- the usb-char driver could be adapted to do
this. There did not seem to be something that corresponds to the
usb-net driver -- the closest thing is an ethernet. In this case, you
would have to emulate both the host's and the peripheral's ethernet
device, instead of emulating a point-to-point network connection.

The id in the sa11x0 driver is officially assigned to Compaq Itsy. That
is where the drivers was originally developed.
I have located the source for the Windows driver that went with the
original version of the itsy-eth driver. I was planning to attach a
non-GPL open source license so that it would be buildable using the
Microsoft SDK.
