Even with a USB cradle, it is possible. If you get the PCB out of the
USB cradle (you can do that without breaking anything and restore itwhen
linux is up),
you will notice that there are solder pads (14) on the back side of the
PCB (where you should be able to see CON2).
You can, temporarily, create your own serial cable using the following
recipe (you will have to solder ...):
female DB9 {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8} <--> CON2 {6,4,5,7,9,1,2,3}
This will allow you to talk to your ipaq with minicom or hyperterminal
and download linux and eventually set up a USB connection to the ipaq
(how to do that can be found on handhelds.org somewhere),
so the serial cable can be removed ...
It worked for me ...
