Please go and kick pocketlinux's butt to include a more recent kenrel,
or better get the current kernel and the familiar distribution from
familiar.handhelds.org (there is a more up to date installation
instruction there too)
the 2.9.5 bootloader has some known shortcommings and should not be used
(2.17.x is the current version)

Luckily you've not fried/bricked your iPaq, what you got is the parrot
bootloader from WinCE, you should be able to boot back to WinCE and try
again with the familiar installation instruction (please note that the
2.17.x bootloaders are completely incompatible to the setup that
pocketlinux apprenatly still used (multiple partitions like boot, root,
kernel ...)
We now are able to boot a kenrel directly from the JFFS file system and
so you only need one partition (and the params are read from a file in
the filesystem too).
If you want to stick with pocketlinux you should get the last (IIRC)
2.15.x bootloader that still supports multiple partitiones)
Have a good weekend,
Goetz.
