The tricky part is installing the bootloader, once that is finished, you should be out of the danger zone.
I don't think it is possible to make the installation of the bootloader more save, unless of course
compaq comes up with a failsafe mechanism in hardware to install a bootloader (sort of 'pre-bootloader'-bootloader).

It is possible to attach a serial cable to your usb cradle.
You have to get the PCB out of the cradle. On the backside of the PCB (the other side of the USB connector), you will see
some solder pads, where the serial connector should come (called 'CON2'). This is where you can attach your serial cable (by soldering of course).

Attach the wires as follows :

female DB9 { 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 } < -- > CON2 {6,4,5,7,9,1,2,3 }

It worked for me ...
