While I've just rebooted my iPaq to figure this out, I relised that I'd
need a serial port (but my mac does not have one and my PC is down),
otoh my Rev 2.17.0 bootloader prints it version to the display. But you
can enter 'help' or '?' to get a list of commands the bootloader
understands.

That's the mistacke, ther protokoll must be off (no handschake, neither
hardware nor xon/xoff)

I don't know what hyperterm prints, but I think it might be the fact
that you've asked for xon/xoff, what the iPaq does not support.
Try again with no handschake and remember to use the basic version of
the xmodem protokol (iirc Hyperterm does not support anything but this
anyway).
