I got the whole unit replaced in the end; they didn't even look at it!
I must congratulate Compaq (Australia) for wonderful service.
I had the problem with fam0.4 & fam0.5 (as I point out below); I
installed 0.5.1pre on the new unit (same model, 3630) and don't have the
trouble - so either the problem has been fixed or it's the unit that's
'broken'.
