Not to butt my nose in too far, but I have written just such a code
already, ipaq-sleep. (Look in the unstable feed)
It *used* to use x-screensave extensions, but that wasn't really
necessary for my purposes since I could get what I wanted from the
/proc/micro/stats file so I pulled it out.
I could add backlight dimming to ipaqsleep relatively easily, I think if
there was sufficient interest.
