You might like to examine tslib. Please see:

   http://www.arm.linux.org.uk/cvs/

for more information. It has been written to cater primerily for
UCB1x00 touchscreens, but should work on the iPAQ with very little
problem.

It isn't complete yet, but is basically functional, and provides a
useful user space solution.
