When you "hit any key to continue" after the xmodem transfer,
were there any messages at all before it gave you the "boot>"
prompt again? Also, during the xmodem transfer was there
just one line of status information, incrementing packet
number and kilobytes transferred, or was there a lot of
scrolling stuff (error messages)?

If you were using osloader-1-2 and bootldr-2-8-4, you
need to be very quick when starting xmodem. A two-step
method seems best:

1. type "load bootldr" to the boot> prompt, then hit
"control-a", "z", "s" to tell minicom to transfer
a file, then two down-arrows to select xmodem,
then hit return in the file browser while the ".."
file is selected to get it to give you an explicit
file prompt. Type in the name of the file and
hit return. All this has taken at least 10 seconds,
so at this point the file transfer will look like
it's happening rapidly, but in fact there are just
   a bunch of errors. Hit control-c to stop the transfer;
you'll see the iPAQ side of the conversation print
a dot every few seconds. When you see a dot, hit
space (I think; maybe control-c again?). It will
give you a boot> prompt, and you're ready to try again.

2. Now for the real thing. "load bootldr", then
   rapidly "control-a", "z", "s", "downarrow", "downarrow",
"enter", "enter", "enter". The same filename you
entered before will show up by default, so this
little dialog will accept it. The status display
should be noticeably different, showing an orderly
   sequence of downloaded xmodem packets.

Another possibility is that you did successfully load
the bootldr your first time but perhaps waited too long
after the transfer completed to "hit any key to continue"
and see any confirmatory messages. Hard to say.
I don't think it would hurt to download the bootldr
again---you're simply overwriting the same flash locations.
