[iPAQ] Unable to access http://www.handhelds.org/ CVS tree

I can logon:

 cvs login :pserver:anoncvs@cvs.handhelds.org:/cvs
password: anoncvs
(Only on logon is needed.)

I have CVSROOT set:

 $echo $CVSROOT
:pserver:anoncvs@cvs.handhelds.org:/cvs

All other commands (checkout, update) result in:

Sorry, you don't have read/write access to the history file
/cvs/CVSROOT/history
Permission denied.

Any ideas?
