Nobody asked me, but ... my suggested priority list goes as follows:
1) USB bootloader.
Why? Because we need as many developers as possible, and right now
you have to be handy with a soldering iron to make a serial cable, and
because everybody's iPAQ comes with USB. And because the xmodem
protocol times out too quickly.
2) USB networking.
Why? Because it's a lot faster than RS-232, because it comes standard
with the machine (unlike CF or PCMCIA Ethernet), and because everybody
has USB on their desktop. Because we need as many developers as
possible, and native development is easier than cross development.
3) A guarantee from Compaq that failed bootldr flashes will be
replaced.
Why? Because people are deterred from flashing bootldr because it has
the potential for toasting their machine. If we could get a guarantee
from Compaq that a new machine (<60 days old) which no longer boots
will be replaced (with a machine that has bootldr flashed), then the
incentive would be on Compaq engineers to ensure that the bootldr
flashing is as reliable as possible. There is no incentive for
purposely wrongly flashing bootldr, because it comes back with bootldr
flashed.
The best solution to this problem would be for bootldr to come with
the machine.
