No change when using the speakers, though I can hear the problem
more clearly :-) --- there's a periodic tapping about ten
times a second, accompanied by abrupt changes in volume every
second or so, plus a burst of noise just as the clip ends.
I'll try to record this on a desktop machine and post a pointer.

Also there's a considerable delay, about ten seconds, from
starting mpg123 to hearing sound.

I don't think it's running out of CPU: top claims around 28%
(though it is pegged at 98% during startup). The boot messages
say 180.22 bogomips; is this the usual value?

Something's strange. I tried the MP3 posted by Russ Nelson and
got this error message:
