[iPAQ] audio problem in v0.12?

I'm getting broken-up audio with the v0.12 distribution (using
the 2-36 init-ramdisk, cramfs, and cramfs-usr). There's a very
loud periodic screeching. I tried both mpg123 from the serial
shell and gqmpeg on the X display.

Oddly, I could sometimes get the sound to clear up by moving
around the gqmpeg window or fiddling with the volume slider.
Once this activity stopped, though, the audio would go bad again.
