Thanks all who replied to my question.

I guess I was confused on the serial vs USB issue by the "Some
clarification needed" thread on the linux list last month. I hadn't even
opened the box when I had posted that question b/c I wanted to know the
difference between the models first, in case I needed to return it. However,
after Jim's encouragement, I opened it and saw that it did come with the
USB cradle.

My choice of H3600, as opposed to PDAs from other manufacturers, was
driven mainly because of the availability of Linux on the H3600, and at
least the appearance of unofficial support for Linux on the H3600 from
Compaq via handhelds.org. Since the supply of H3600s is scarce, I didn't
have the opportunity to see the unit before purchasing it. I was a bit
nervous of ordering a product sight unseen, but as I said, my primary
criteria was that the handheld PDA run Linux, so I was willing to accept
compromises on the hardware for the ability to run Linux. Fortunately,
after finally being able to use the unit, I was very relieved to see that H3600
is vastly superior to all the other handheld PDAs that I had looked at (i.e.
HP, Casio, Palm, etc…)! All I can say is "Wow!"

Anyway, I called Compaq's tech support on Monday, and indeed the
representative said, just as Jim suggested, the units are identical and the
different numbers merely indicates the manner in which the unit was sold.
