We provide very similar kernel modules to Familiar (because we use
almost the same kernel config to make our kernels), so if your mmc
hardware is supported there, it should be with us, but I can't verify
that - anyone running on a 38xx wish to comment?

Unless you want to do substantial amounts of the work yourself, no. We
have only just started to get 38xx compatible - most of us are on 36xx
hardware.
If you get yourself familiar with bootldr, how familiar boots, a bit of
debian setup and look at our initrd's, you would be able to get pretty
much the same hardware support as that Familiar provides for the 39xx
iPAQs (I'm not sure what that is, but the handhelds.org Wiki has a page for each
platform detailing the level of support).
Cheers,
