intimate install

I have a 3600 ipaq. I have familiar 0.6 installed. I have a pcmcia jacket.
I have a 2gb pcmcia card. I am trying to get intimate installed.

I followed the instructions at http://intimate.handhelds.org/install.html

Everything seemed to go right. I answered most of the questions with the
default. The only ones I answered different where the upgrade questions
about upgrading my configs. Since I didn't have any configs that I needed I
said Y to all of them when the default was no.

When I boot my ipaq it still comes up to Opie. As I watch the serial port
output of the terminal while it boots the one thing I notice that seems to
indicate something is that it can't find a VFAT partition on the 2gb pcmcia
card. Well, of course not because the installation for intimate creates
reiserfs partitions. In fact the first time I ran the install I tried doing
it when I had already created the partitions on the drive as FAT. The
install didn't like that at all because it wanted reiserfs.

Once it boots to Opie I go to the serial port shell and try to mount the
/dev/hda1 and it gives an error that it can't find a valid VFAT partition.

Any suggestions?

My goal is to be able to do video driver and usb host development on my
ipaq for some expansion pack hardware I have built. So I need to be able to
build the kernel and x windows (I think). I am somewhat new to linux in
general, but I have mainframe background from many years ago. Please be
gentle with me :-) I am excited to finally have a project I can work on
Linux with after so many years in the Windoz worlds.

I can flash the ipaq because it is totally a dev device for me. Just give
me the steps I need to make to get to the point where I can do development
of drivers and apps on linux for ipaq. I have the jacket and the 2gb card.
I also have a wireless orinoco card. That is how I ran the install for all
the downloading.

I would prefer just being able to fix the install where it is at because I
spent the whole day doing the install with downloading and all, but if I
have to start over so be it I am willing to do so.
