no window manager

I can't seem to get a window manager running on my ipaq. When I try to
run blackbox, I get the following:

intimate:~# blackbox
failed to open catalog, using default messages
BaseDisplay::BaseDisplay: connection to X server failed.

Can someone give me some guidance about how to go troubleshooting?
