Short answer: You definitely can boot from external storage (At least
from CF (flashing SDG loader), but SD also works if you flash the kernel
into the internal flash too. Of course your kernel should capable to use
your card and filesystem during boot (ie.: not as a module).

Sorry, I'm so busy now, but try to read through this list, there are a
lot of help on this topic. Well, it will not be so hard, unfortunately
there is not so many entry on this list in the last few month:-(

And (I think it is not only my opinion) it is better to use Angstrom
distribution.
