Hi,
I had been wrestling with my hx4700 all night trying to get around a
"clientclientclientclient" response when trying to connect to my pda via
usb through minicom. Even after resetting the pda with bootloader key
combo, minicom could not find my pda and give me a USB> prompt.
However in my research I came across an excellent program that I
successfully used to dump the memory of my hx4700, as an alternate to
minicom / hyperterminal.
The program is called mtty -

required)
So I followed the instructions about dumping the rom in the hx4700 wiki,
replacing this program with minicom, and I dumped the memory with no
incident.
This is how I used mtty for anyone new to this (like I am .. )
<< !!! use at your own risk - back your data up first - I won't be
responsible for dead hardware !!! >>
1) Get the hx4700 ready (place in 256mb SD card, hit bootloader key
combo and hit reset for 2 sec)
2) Pda screen should read "Serial" with a HP logo in centre of
screen (backlight won't be on so get your reading glasses out)
3) Connect USB cradle to comp in Windows (I used XP home for this)
but don't connect pda yet.
4) If running, kill activesync (right click on taskbar, select task
manager, kill wscecomm.exe process)
5) Place your pda in the usb cradle. Your pda screen should now read
"USB" if it's connected to your host comp properly.
6) Run mtty program
7) Select these options: "Bits per second = 115200, Data bits = 8,
Parity = None, Stop bits = 1, Flow control = None" (equivelant to 115200
8N1 setting in minicom) and in the drop down menu in upper left of dialog,
select //WSCECOMM1 then hit ok
8) A blank screen will open on your host computer (ensure your pda
is hooked up to your host machine now)
9) Hit enter and it should take you to the USB> prompt.
10) At this point, you can now follow the rest of the instructions in
the "bootloader" section of the hx4700 wiki.
11) When you're done (ensure your pda says "checksum OK!"), close mtty
(and save your terminal history just incase you need to refer to it) then
disconnect usb cable from host comp, then pull pda out and hit reset. Your
pda should boot back into WinCE.
Hope this helps some of you that are having issues talking to your pda in
a USB connection.
Now... onto getting my inspiron 9300 built in card reader to work in linux
so I can make the bootloader for pocket linux....
Enjoy
Chris
