Suspend works much better in the new zImage and modules.tgz that I
uploaded, but I'll do another full starter kit next week.

Yes, this problem is known. It has to do with screen refresh timings.
Quick taps generally work better than slow, deliberate taps in my
experience. We will fix that problem as soon as we learn where to
measure the screen taps.

Yes, another known problem. We are not working on Opie right now, but
Qtopia. Koen is building GPE, I believe. Some developer feel free to
jump in on Opie, if you want. The Zaurus VGA build (if there is such a
thing) is probably the right place to start.
