David,
When you do DD the SD card should not be mounted at all. DD
overwrites the partition table and all with the raw data from your
image. The destination file you give it is the device, not the mounted
file system. For windows i may suggest rawwrite to write the image.
As for your windows not responding to the card, if you ever want to
use the card again for purposes other than installing bootldr you
should partition+format card to write a working fs on to it again.
