The error messages from the HTC bootloader are OK. It writes the image
regardless of the checksum. Did you use 'dd if=bootldr of=/dev/sda' to
write the bootloader? The bootldr image contains a marker that tells the
HTC flash writer program where the end of the image is. It flashes very
quickly with the small bootldr. I can post md5sums, if you still have
problems. Hopefully, HP didn't change some piece of hardware or
something ugly like that.

Right, using the HTC tool starts writing at 0x40000, preserving the
original bootloader. Does the bootldr produce any serial output? Here's
