I checked that the asic3_base module loads fine. I will try to make leds
work tomorrow (hopefully).

If it's just a serial cable issue, you can make one from the cradle of
your h3900: see http://opdenacker.org/pda/ipaq/serial_cable/. You'll
find more possibilities on
http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HpIpaqSerialCable, though I'm sure
you already know them all...
