looks like I solved the problem. as I feared, it was an hardware issue,
but not as severe as I feared.
I believed the battery switch was locked, but I discovered today that
the little plastic tooth that pulls the switch is broken.. using a
little piece of plastic, glued to a scotch tape, that holds the switch
closed, now buttons work normally.
