I just dd'd the rootfs.img over to my ext2 partition - the OS boots up fine,
only the normal problems now, heh heh. Thanks for the help! I'll be back
from a mini-vacation on Monday.

Your using different files, diff boot/kernel, etc then
-- the ones i have don't use rootfs, initrd, etc. Just a simple zImage,
that jumps over to your existing ext2 partition for the rootfs. (like a
normal computer boot)
If you are using a different zImage, with rootfs, initd. then your root
is inside that rootfs file (i.e. it ignores any EXT2 you have).
-- Sort of like a LiveCD. It's great for when all you have is a FAT
drive and nothing dedicated to linux, I just don't like it because it's
harder to move files around when it's not running. -- I can pull my CF drive
out, connected to my laptop and change any file on the EXT2 partition, copy
over binarys and edit configs.
It's very hard to mix and match zImages and boots configs, etc. Normally
they are all setup as one set of files, as one working boot config.
Now that you have a running linux, enjoy it and play around. Besure to make
a backup of your VFAT files so you can experiment, but be able to restore
them to a 'working state'. --For my preferances, I'll stick with a
dedicated linux partition.

It boots! I was able to log into GPE with the screen still shifted.
To get it booting I had to use the 0.3.6-2 signed haret and then follow the
rest of the hx2750 compilation instructions(default.txt using /dev/ram0
rather than /dev/hda2., zImage, initrd, and rootfs.img on my FAT partition
of my PNY 256MB CF).
Next step will be checking out what works. I'll have all weekend to play
around with it. I'll check the kernel source and see what the screen code
looks like, but that is for next week.

One issue with the kernel I use is that it doesn't recognize all media.
If you are using CF default.txt root=/dev/hda2 (depending on how
you partition your card)
and for SD cards use: root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 (A few users have managed
to use it on SD,
I personally haven't been able to- I get read errors on my generic SD
cards.)
Besure you soft-reset windows if you can before running HaRET, it gives
you better chances of it running.
If you can use another system you can telnet in to the HaRET when the
machine is on the same WiFi Lan to watch it preboot,
and see WHERE it is getting stalled at.
One of these days, I'll get more time and compile a new kernel, maybe fix
the screen issue... but since it doesn't affect my unit, testing will be a
pain.
--at that point I'll be screaming for volunteers to see if anything
works on fixing it.
My 2 cents,
Ken

Well, I tried using the kernel from Ken's site for the hx2495 and the kernel
for the hx4100. Ken's kernel (v196) was able to proceed past the haret
screen. It gave me the shifted screen issue and could not find the root
device. I played with some different device names in default.txt, but had
no success. The hx4100 kernel didn't get past the haret screen (go figure).
I'll put in some more time on this tomorrow, then I'm off to Chicago for the
weekend.
Where will I be able to help on this project? I'm not capable of kernel
coding, but I'm willing to put my time into learning if I have to. Next
week I'm going to play around with OE and Familiar to get a solid grasp on
what we're dealing with here.

Hello, I'm new to the list - I've got a hx2795b that I'd love to have
running linux. I'm about to start playing around with putting a kernel on
my 256MB CF by PNY. I'll post results once I have something of substance.
I'm not a coder, but I might be able to put some pieces together if I have
to, we will see. If anyone else has gotten an image working on the hx2795b,
then please let me know! If the project needs any hosting I can offer it up
courtesy of my Dreamhost account. I'm looking forward to getting something
working here.
