so i guess your model is a hx2110. it would be nice if you could take a
look at http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/HpIpaqHx2000 and maybe add
some information about your device (differences to the other hx2000 series
models).

at http://projects.o-hand.com/hx2750/ you can download everything you need
to boot your device from a compact flash card.

> - do I risk damaging my device ?

you are doing this at your own risk. see readme.txt file. i have not heard
of any damage caused by a boot from compact flash or sd card using haret.
damages usually only occur if you try to reflash your device.

no, if you hard-reset your device windows ce will boot again (win ce
userdata will be lost on a linux boot)

both images available boot from compact flash, one also from sd. if you
want to boot the device without an external storage card you can copy
haret kernel and initrd to your ipaq file store under win ce and start
haret from there. the root file system is to big though - so you won't see
much more than the kernel boot.
you could try to create a small enough root file system to fit the ipaq
file store.
