(Thanks to Philipp for this reference).

  The "good" news is that with 2 SD cards I have here (Transcend 1Gb &
Hagiwara 128Mb), I still get detection *before* switching to
userspace, in other words, can still boot w/o rootdelay - on both
h4000 & hx4700.

  The bad news is that Philipp can't boot even with rootdelay=1. ;-(
Worth booting from initrd/NFS, I guess, and try to mount first.
