What about the kernel and kernel modules?

I wonder if we can push the script changes you have into the universal
image (with sufficient machine id checks).

I also wonder if both phones can use the same kernel itself. In
theory, the platform device tables should allow the machine id to be
detected at startup. Since both phones are so similar, I don't think
the extra overhead of storing a few extra drivers for other phones
will be noticed.
