HP RX3715 hangs at bootup

My rx3715 was running OK, then the screen just faded to gray. Now it hangs
at bootup, never getting past the "HP iPAQ Mobile Media Companion" boot
screen. The status bar advances all the way to the right, but then nothing.

I'm running firmware version 1.00.10B. The only way to power it off is to
pop out the battery.

Could this be indicative of the need for a new battery? Or would you guess
the device is hosed?
