I beleive those values could be inherited from the WinCE bootup, ala
the WinCE mips Free OSes. On them they boot after WinCE and use WinCE
to load the kernel. The kernel generally doesn't reset the entire
chip, but uses some things that WinCE setup. Most of the Mips based
pdas have had enough of their hardware decoded to allow at least
remote access to the unit. As a native development platform, this is
a very attractive way to do things.

One could also setup a SCSI card and use one of the many SCSI <->
Ethernet adapters out there. Of course, one might need to write a
driver for them, and I don't know how easy/hard this will be.
