usb to serial

I currently have an ipaq and am trying to put linux onto it. I need to
convert the usb cradle to serial cable and was looking at the how-to page on
the subject. Am I correctly interpreting the table
(http://cvs.handhelds.org/minihowto/h3600-serial-cable.html) in that I
simply connect the pins listed in each row of the table together? Also, I
opened up the ipaq cradle and looked at the chip inside. The wiring looks
like it would need to be very precise. Not having played around with
hardware too much, I was wondering if anybody could give me some suggestions
as to the best way for me to go about wiring the pins.
