Ok! I'll go ahead and update it once I get to the point that I'm
confident that my problems weren't my own doing :).

I did get it from cvs.handhelds.org. Running 'make menuconfig' seems
to work better now that everything is installed. In any case, I wanted
it to produce something that would be consistent with the kernel in the
familiar distribution I installed, and there didn't seem to be a
user-friendly
way to do this in menuconfig. There is the 'Load Alternate Configuration
File' selection at the bottom, but it just prompts for a filename, and
it appears that one has to know what to type in. Following the instructions
in README.HANDHELDS seemed simpler once I figured out I needed to run
'make include/linux/version.h'.
